With most of the US Army in the Middle East, a good deal of the surviving soldiers are National Guardsmen, reservists or recruits, fresh out of bootcamp. Given the desperate nature of the zombie outbreak, they aren't exceptionally well-equipped, carrying an M16 or M4 rifle and donning only a standard ACU combat uniform. Regardless, they're the backbone of a military defense against the undead.

Machine Gunners are simply soldiers with M249 light machine guns. As with basic Privates, MGers are usually fresh recruits, reservists or National Guardsman. The key difference is that MGers are given special bite-vests made of kevlar, which provide much better protection than a standard ACU. Machine Gunners are flexible and can be used for saturation or precision firepower: when deployed, they are more accurate and do greater damage to individuals, but are prone to being swarmed- when standing, they are less accurate, but cause less damage overall as a consequence.

As a Machine Gunner is trained to use a Machine Gun, the Sniper is trained to use the Sniper Rifle, and specializes in precision elimination. On their own, Snipers are extremely vulnerable to attack- they can't be expected to fatally shoot every time and when aiming is considered, they don't exactly fire quickly. Snipers work best in concert with shorter range units that can withstand zombie attack, or from inside buildings.

Engineers are unarmed specialist infantry of the military. They can repair structures and bridges, and capture buildings, which can then be used for a greater strategic purpose by military forces. They can also defuse explosives set on objects- if the need be. They are not well armed and in a fight against a zombie, are essentially helpless, so they need escort.

The Combat Engineer has a special role in the war against the zombies. While typically, regular Engineers are used to fix things, Combat Engineers exist to blow things up. They carry a large amount of C4 and can place it on bridges, buildings and even some vehicles, to create ambushes and car-bombs and kill-zones Combat Engineers are poorly suited for directly fighting zombies however, like regular Engineers.

Medics are another type of support infantry that the military employs in the war against the undead. These soldiers are equipped with antibiotics, pain-killer and other medical equipment to ensure that those on the front line fighting the undead can continue to fight.

Humvees are basic military vehicles. They are very fast and carry a powerful M240 7.62mm machine gun. While most Humvees in the US aren't prepared for a zombie outbreak, they can provide protection long enough for the crew to get out of a danger zone. They can be loaded with 3 infantry that can fire out of it.

M113 APCs represent the majority of remaining APCs in the United States, with most M2 Bradleys and LAVs deployed in the Middle East. Their aluminum armor is quite effective at keeping zombies out, however, the design has a number of weakpoints that mean that zombies can feasibly compromise the vehicle. M113s lack fireports and infantry inside are just along for the ride.

The precious remaining Abrams Tanks in the United States are among the most powerful land units the military has against the undead hordes. They are essentially invulnerable to zombie attack- their destructive capacity only limited by the fact they carry just 10 canister anti-personnel rounds. After firing these, the tank will very slowly reload them, one at a time.
